Despite the trend of continued decrease in coal consumption in the power generation sector, Korea's coal consumption is expected to remain at the current level until 2040 due to the increase in consumption in the industrial sector. In particular, in the power generation sector, the use of low-quality coal is expected to gradually increase. In this study, various analyses were conducted to predict the possibility of using low-rank and low-grade coal from Indonesia as power generation fuel. Analyses included mineralogical characterization in terms of carbonization and washability analyses and basic crushing characterization. The results of this study show that the average vitrinite reflectance was approximately 0.437, and the coal was classified as sub-bituminous B grade based on the results of proximate and ultimate analyses. The washability analysis suggests that the separating efficiency is not high, and approximately 51% of the products with 15% ash could be recovered when separating at an overall specific gravity of 1.64.
