Petroleum producing countries and international oil companies should have an accurate and standard assessment program for their petroleum resources on a regular basis in order to effectively manage their asset. Accurate and standard resource assessment is dependent upon a good petroleum deposit classification system. Since every country or oil companies have their own classification system, it is not easy to compare petroleum resources of different classification systems. Petroleum related societies such as SPE and AAPG in addition to the United Nations try to have a common resource classification system. Petroleum resource classification system, however, can not be consolidated due to the characteristics of oil producing countries. Korea became a petroleum producing country since the production of Donghae-1 gas field in 2004. Korea needs an acceptable petroleum deposit classification system throughout the petroleum upstream industry in order to manage the overseas petroleum development projects underway. A petroleum deposit classification system is now proposed.
