Abstract
Rock Mechanics and rock engineering have relatively short historical era but their achievements shows quite outstanding results in Korea. The experts currently working increased up to about 1,200 which are 50 times more than the numbers of 30 years ago. The research trend tends to move from the so called conventional rock engineering fields to the new purpose-oriented parts. The conventional fields can be categorized as rock properties, blasting, excavation, support, classification, stress measurement and the new fields are joint and fracture, discontinuum analysis, THM analysis, fusion technology, etc. In the future, it can be prospected that rock engineering will contribute to finding solutions for oversea resources developments, establishing the technical infra for national land development, construction of HLW repository and undersea tunnels connecting neighbor countries, development of underground space below DMZ area and so on.
