Applications and Prospects of Digital Twin Technology in Mineral and Energy Resource Engineering

Abstract

This paper examines specific applications and general prospects of digital twin technology, one of the core technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, in the fields of mineral and energy resource engineering. A digital twin system is a simulation system based on real-time measurements; it can be used as a tool for optimizing the development and production of resources. Currently, digital twin technology is being used in the detection of anomalies in processing plants, the optimization of mining and blasting processes, and the optimization and control of drilling. The scope of its application is expected to expand in the future. Digital twins can be built efficiently by combining various existing simulation techniques, and the potential field of application of such systems is expected to expand through their concurrent use with various information and communication technologies.

본 논문에서는 4차 산업혁명의 핵심기술 중 하나인 디지털 트윈을 자원공학 분야에 적용한 사례를 살펴보고, 해당 기술의 향후 활용 전망에 대하여 고찰하였다. 디지털 트윈은 실시간 계측을 기반으로 하는 시뮬레이션 체계로서 자원의 개발 및 생산을 위한 최적화 도구로 활용될 수 있으며, 이러한 특성을 기반으로 여러 분야에서의 도입이 시작되고 있다. 현재 자원공학 분야에서는 선광 공정에서의 이상 감지, 채굴 및 발파 공정 최적화, 시추 최적화 및 제어 등의 분야에서 활용되고 있으며, 향후 적용 분야는 더욱 늘어날 것으로 보인다. 디지털 트윈은 기존에 구축된 다양한 시뮬레이션 기법과 결합시킴으로써 효율적인 구축이 가능하며, 다양한 정보통신 관련 기술과의 복합적인 활용을 통한 활용 분야의 확대를 기대할 수 있다.
