Considering the fact that more than 97% of fossil energy resources, such as oil and natural gas, needed in demand in Korea rely on import, primary concern of the national economy is to secure future energy resources. An unconventional type of natural gas, gas hydrate is distributed worldwide, especially in marine and permafrost regions. Recently it is drawing much attention as a new clean energy resource that can substitute conventional oil and gas, thanks to it huge amount of presumed volume reaching 10 trillion tons of natural gas, and also its environmentally friendly characteristics. Geophysical survey and drilling conducted in Korea showed that gas hydrate naturally exists in deep sea at over 1,500 m of water depth in the East Sea. This study presents the potentiality and development prospects of gas hydrate as a future energy resource, to effectively meet the rapidly increasing consumption of natural gas.
국내에서 소비되는 석유・천연가스 등과 같은 화석연료의 97%이상을 수입에 의존하고 있는 현실에서 국가경제의 주요 관심사는 미래의 에너지 자원을 확보하는 것이다. 신석유자원으로 알려진 가스하이드레이트는 심해지역과 영구 동토지역 등 전 세계적으로 널리 분포하고 있으며, 약 10조 톤이라는 엄청난 자원량과 환경 친화적이라는 특성으로 석유나 천연가스를 대체할 새로운 청정 에너지자원으로서 최근 주목을 끌고 있다. 국내의 경우, 현재까지의 물리탐사 및 시추결과를 통해 수심 1,500 m 이상의 동해안 심해에서 가스하이드레이트의 부존을 확인한 바 있다. 본 연구에서는 가스하이드레이트의 특성과 국내외 기술개발 현황을 고찰함으로써 급속히 증가하고 있는 천연가스 소비량을 대체할 미래 에너지자원의 관점에서 가스하이드레이트의 잠재적인 가능성 및 개발가치에 대한 전망결과를 제시하였다.
