The State of Sonora has a complex geological environment and lithological variation with ages ranging from Precambrian to recent. Precambrian sequence is represented by the characteristics of metamorphic complex of the igneous and sedimentary source, quartzite and dolomite. Paleozoic sequence is composed of platform limestone and sandstone. Mesozoic sequence consists mainly of limestone, sandstone and conglomerate. During Tertiary, batholithic intrusion intruded and two volcanic activities generated. Terrigeneous sediments were deposited during Quaternary. The State of Sonora hosts a variety type of ore deposits, which are divided into vein-type, stratiform-type, disseminated-type, irregular-type and detritic-type, based on their occurrences. The vein-type mainly includes gold, silver, base-metal, fluorite and manganese deposits, whereas stratiform-type deposits are barite, anthracite and amorphous graphite deposit. Porphyry style Cu-Mo deposits belong to disseminated-type, and skarn, magmatic segregation, and volcanogenic ore deposits are widely distributed in the State of Sonora. Auriferous placer deposits as detritic-type also have the great potential for mining.
소노라주의 지질은 선캠브리아기부터 근세까지 다양하며 암상변화가 크다. 선캠브리아기의 암상은 화성 및 퇴적기원 변성 복합체, 규암 및 고회암이 우세하며, 고생대층은 탁상지 석회암 및 사암, 중생대층은 석회암, 사암 및 역암으로 구성되어 있다. 제3기에는 저반 형태의 관입체가 발달되었으며, 두 개의 큰 화산활동이 발생했다. 제4기에는 육성 퇴적물이 발달했다. 소노라주에는 다양한 유형의 광상이 부존하며, 산출특성에 따라 맥상, 산점상, 불규칙 및 쇄설성 광상으로 분류할 수 있다. 맥상광상은 주로 금, 은, 천금속(base metal), 형석 및 망간 광상 등이 해당된다. 층상 광상으로는 중정석, 무연탄 및 비정질 흑연 광상을 들 수 있다. 반암동-몰리브덴 광상은 산점상 유형에 해당하며, 스카른, 마그마 분결작용 및 화산성 광상 등이 소노라주 전반에 걸쳐 폭넓게 분포하고 있다. 쇄설성 광상으로는 함금 사광상이 있으며, 상당한 잠재성을 갖는 것으로 평가된다.
