This paper describes three chemical-enhanced recovery methods including polymer flood, surfactant flood, and micellar-polymer flood and compares the results with that from waterflood. The comparisons were based on the numerical investigations of a two-well model in a five-spot pattern operating under various injection sequences. UTCHEM, a three-dimensional numerical model for fluid flow and mass transport, is used to analyze the performance of the reservoir. This study places an emphasis on the design and reservoir parameters including slug design, oil viscosity, and initial oil saturation which are known to influence the efficiency of chemical floods. Results for the four processes are compared and contrasted, showing that on the basis of oil recovery, the types and sequence of injecting fluids were shown to impact the predicted recovery. Micellar-polymer flooding was shown to recover a large fraction of the remaining oil, especially in reservoir with residual oil saturation. It is noted that although an increased recovery is obtained with polymer or micellar-polymer flood in unfavorable mobility conditions, the significant increase in the amount of pressure drop at the injection well may make the application impractical.
