Geotomography and Medical Imaging Technology 지하단면 영상법과 의학 영상 기술

Abstract

Geotomography as a subsurface imaging technique in geophysical prospecting visualizes subsurface physical properties and structural continuity at a glance on the cross-section. Thanks to this advantage, geotomography has been actively applied in geophysical exploration and near-surface geological survey as well as civil, construction and environmental engineering as a high-precision investigation tool. Meanwhile, the medical imaging technology that is a counterpart of geotomography enables to look inside the human body without inserting a physical device or making an incision. For this reason, medical imaging and the geotomographic imaging are conceptually identical and share significant similarities in many aspects. This paper examines possibility of converging the geophysical and medical fields by introducing the principles of the most widely used medical imaging technology such as CT (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography), PET (positron emission tomography) and ultrasound imaging.

물리탐사에서 적용하고 있는 지하 영상화 기술인 지하단면 영상법(geotomography)은 지하 단면의 물성 분 포와 그 연속성을 한 눈에 나타낼 수 있어 물리탐사나 지질조사 외에도 토목, 건설, 환경 분야의 정밀 조사 수단으로 적극적으로 활용되고 있다. 한편, 의학 분야에서도 인체의 내부를 물리적인 장치를 삽입하거나 인체를 절개하지 않고 서도 인체 내부를 들여다 볼 수 있게 하는 것이 의학 영상 기술(medical imaging technology)이다. 따라서 의학 영상 기 술과 물리탐사의 지하 영상화 기술의 원리는 개념적으로 같으며 상당한 부분에서 유사한 점이 많다고 볼 수 있다. 여기 서는 현재 의학 영상 분야에서 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 X-선 컴퓨터 단층촬영(CT), 자기공명 영상(MRI), 핵의학 영상 분야인 단일광자방출 컴퓨터 단층촬영(SPECT)과 양전자방출 단층촬영(PET) 그리고 초음파 영상 기술의 원리와 기 법 등을 소개함으로써 물리탐사와 의학 분야의 융합 가능성을 들여다보고자 한다.
