This paper summarizes the main contents of the 2nd National Master Plan for Energy which was discussed and passed in the Cabinet Council on 14 January 2014. This plan presents the basic visions and directions of energy policies for decades to come through 2035. It proposes also principal objectives and tasks of six main policies. The six main policies are as follows: transition to energy policies focusing on demand management; establishment of the system for distributed power generation; enhancement of the sustainability of energy policies; reinforcement of energy security; stable framework for secure energy supplies; energy policies in tune with the people. This plan includes an energy demand forecast over the period to 2035, and sets a goal to reduce the final energy demand in 2035 by 13.3% compared to the reference case. In this plan, the share of nuclear power in 2035 is set at 29% in terms of power generation capacity, and that of renewable energy at 11% in terms of primary energy.
