Abstract
This study presents the 3 dimensional finite element analysis of the stress path of the rock mass around an underground opening i.e. a tunnel, while the excavation and support are progressed. The effects of shotcrete and rockbolt supports on the stress path are analyzed, while the lateral coefficient of earth pressure K is varied from 0.62, 2.44 to 4.26. Compared to the unsupported excavation, the shotcrete and rockbolt supports increase the minor principal stress around the excavation surface by 1.4 to 2 times, resulting a triaxial stress state. In this study the concept of trend distance ratio and trend angle are also used to analyze the stability assessment of the rock mass around an underground opening. It is noted that the shotcrete and rockbolt supports improve the stability of the underground opening by the amount of 6.8%~9.1% and 6.4%~11% in terms of the trend distance ratio, 8%~12% and 3%~11% in terms of the trend angle, compared with the unsupported case.
