Basin formation and development, sedimentation, stratigraphy, and petroleum geology of the North-East Greenland shelf are scrutinized, for which a new exploration licensing round is on progress. The Jameson Land basin on land, and Danmarkshavn and Thetis basins on shelf have the mean undiscovered, technically recoverable, conventional petroleum resources of 31 Bboe that rank 4th in the Arctic. The basins contain more than 10 km of Devonian through Holocene sedimentary rocks, deposited through several rifting episodes prior to the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. Multiple source rocks were developed including the Jurassic Hareelv Formation, Permian Ravnefjeld Formation, and lacustrine shales of Devonian and Carboniferous age. Reservoir candidates are synrift conglomerates and sandstones and Permian carbonates. Among them the Middle Jurassic sandstones such as the Vardkløft Group have good porosity and permeability of 21~27% and 263~3,203 md, respectively. Seal rocks include Late Carboniferous and Early Permian evaporites, Ravnefjeld shale, and the Hareelv Formation. The potential traps include synrift structural traps involving fault block tilting, horst, and listric faults, and the stratigraphic traps consisting of Permian carbonate buildups.
