Abstract

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is known as purified and refined synthetic calcium carbonate. PCC is synthesized through calcination process to convert limestone to quicklime, hydration process to make slaked lime and carbonation process to produce precipitated calcium carbonate. PCC is largely classified into calcite (stable phase) and aragonite (metastable phase), and this polymorphism is due to the characteristics of limestone ores and the differences of calcination/hydration/carbonation process conditions. In this study, the effects of the calcination and hydration behavior on the synthesis of PCC will be discussed using limestone with different chemical composition.

침강성탄산칼슘은 순수한 합성 탄산칼슘으로 알려져 있다. 침강성탄산칼슘은 석회석으로부터 생석회(quicklime, CaO)화하는 하소 공정과 생석회를 물과 반응하여 소석회(Slaked lime, Ca(OH)₂)를 합성하는 수화 공정, 소석회를 이산화탄소와 반응시켜 침강성탄산칼슘을 생성시키는 탄산(Carbonation) 공정을 통해 합성된다. 대표적인 침강성탄산칼슘으로 안정상인 칼사이트와 준안정상인 아라고나이트가 있으며, 이러한 동질이상의 차이는 석회석의 광물상의 특징과 하소반응, 수화반응, 탄산화반응의 조건에 따라 발생된다. 본 연구에서는 각기 다른 지역의 석회석을 이용하여 석회석 하소반응과 이에 따른 수화 활성도, 침성탄산칼슘의 생성 거동에 대해 고찰하였다.
