Abstract
Discrete fracture network (DFN) has been widely applied to characterize fluid flow occurred in a heterogeneous fractured reservoir since it is able to consider fracture’s topological distribution as well as aperture statistics. A typical limitation of reservoir characterization using 3D DFN is that it is difficult to obtain accurate geological and hydraulic data affecting fluid transport. Thus, the modeling failed to simulate realistic flow in a reservoir scale and limited at observing fluid transport near wellbore. Current methodological problems of 3D random DFN are meshing, mass transfer between matrix and fracture, and inverse approach, respectively. They have not been announced actively in opposite to the researches based on forward simulation. The future possible researches can be related to automatic meshing in random DFN, multi-phase flow modeling, history matching incorporating with dynamic data, and flow transport integrated with geomechanic characteristics.
