Abstract
Since ground subsidences in waste mine regions occur generally as a residual movement after a long time after mine operation has been ceased, it is difficult to predict precisely the time and the location of subsidence. For this reason, It is strongly required to make a database of subsidence events and to establish a quantitative hazard assessment method for effective and economical management of subsidence problems. In this paper, a new method to assess subsidence hazard quantitatively over old mine areas was developed through compilation and analysis of research articles, documented survey records of Korean coal mine subsidence, results of numerical analyses and physical model experiments. The validation of this method was carried out using 53 previous case records and 2 field survey data. The accuracy of this method was about 85% but further validation using stable cases over mining area is required for an improvement and field applications.
